Top Ten Tips from Think Golf
Some of these tips are just plain common sense but a few are a bit unconventional…
Why is this site called Think Golf instead of some other catchy title? Think Golf has a broad focus. Anything golf-related topic is game: tips, equipment reviews, news items, whatever. This website is for a very special group: folks who really think about golf — a lot.
What I like most about golf is that it’s a sport that requires strategic thinking. I recently got hooked on Sudoku. It requires the same kind of mental discipline as golf. Take Sudoku outside on a warm sunny day and you’ve got golf. You have to plan ahead, check possible approaches, consider your opposition, and get moving. Practice makes a big difference too.
Golf is in some ways a very solitary sport. You compete against yourself as much as other golfers. If you have a off day, it may be due to a physical cause. But it may just be that you aren’t focusing on the game, you’re thinking about something else.
Top 10 Tips from Think Golf
Here are my favorite golf tips.
- The fundamental rule: Hands are always on top of the ball. Head is always behind the ball.
- Practice your swing focusing only with one hand. Never switch this focus. Work with your strength rather than your flexibility. Golf is more about what is certain rather than versatility.
- You don’t need to bring lots clubs with you. Stick with those that work for you, and get to know what they can do for you.
- Pay close attention to the design of your equipment. As your game improves, invest in better equipment.
- Visualize each shot before choosing your club. The shot you have in mind should dictate the choice of club — not the other way around.
- When practicing, focus on the shots that would affect the score. You don’t need to put on a show. It’s just you and the ball, so practice the shots that work.
- It’s never a matter of how far the ball is from the tee hole. It’s always a matter of how far the ball is from your comfort zone. Your comfort zone is the position on the course which you are most familiar with. It is that place where you know you have the best chance of making the ball fall.
- Complicating things is the enemy of a great golf game. Keep things simple. Golf is meant to be that way. Do not make matters complex by trying out a variety of unnecessary shots. Just hit the ball so it hits the green and falls in the hole.
- Success in this sport is determined by what is not played just as much as what is actually played. The processes behind the game of golf are just as important as the actual processes that are visible in the course.
- Think golf! Keep your mind on the game. Plan your shots. Focus.
And don’t forget to have fun!
